How to Pay Fidya in Ramadan 2026

Fidya becomes obligatory when someone misses the fasts during Ramadan due to some valid reasons. Here is how you can pay Fidya in Ramadan 2026.

Fidya

Fidya is known as a compensation that becomes mandatory to pay when someone misses the fasts during Ramadan. Remember that Fidya only applies when someone cannot fast during Ramadan due to some genuine reasons. Islam made it compulsory for all adult and healthy Muslims to fast during Ramadan.

If someone cannot fast during Ramadan, the basic rule is to complete the missed or remaining fasts after Ramadan or whenever possible. In this article, we will discuss in detail what Fidya is. Let’s learn who needs to pay Fidya and how one can pay Fidya in Ramadan 2026:

How to Define Fidya?

In Islam, Fidya is defined as a compensation that needs to be paid by Muslims who are unable to fast during Ramadan. Paying Fidya is a way to get Allah’s forgiveness. Fidya can be paid in the form of feeding the poor. If you miss one fast, you need to offer two meals to a poor person.

However, if you miss more than one fast, you need to pay Fidya for all the missed fasts accordingly. However, if you have other concerns and doubts regarding Fidya, you are advised to contact religious scholars.

Who Needs To Pay Fidya?

Many people are confused regarding what Fidya is and who needs to pay it. Here we come with the detailed analysis of Fidya in Ramadan or Islam. Allah (SWT) narrates the condition of missing fast and Fidya in the Qur’an:

"Fasting is for a fixed number of days, and if one of you is sick, or if one of you is on a journey, you will fast the same number of other days later on. For those who are capable of fasting (but still do not fast) there is a redemption: feeding a needy man for each day missed. Whoever voluntarily does more good than is required, will find it better for him; and that you should fast is better for you, if you only know". (2:184)

Allah addresses people to complete their fast if they have missed it during Ramadan. However, if their reasons are valid, they can go with the option to pay Fidya:

a) Elder and Weak People

People who are elderly and weak enough that their health condition is not improving or worsening day after day, or who fear that fasting can worsen their health, are exempt from fasting. For those people, it is best to pay Fidya to get Allah’s forgiveness.

b) People with Chronic Health Condition

Those who are suffering from chronic health conditions or permanent illness can also miss the fast and pay Fidya. For example, if someone is suffering from diabetes or other serious medical conditions and it is confirmed that fasting can make the conditions even worse, they can miss their fasts. However, for those people, paying Fidya is mandatory. They need to pay Fidya for the entire month or the number of fasts they missed.

How much is Fidya for Missed Fasts?

The set Fidya for missing one fast is to feed a poor person with two meals. However, if you do not want to offer meals, you can pay an amount equivalent to two meals. Here is a detailed analysis of how to calculate and offer meals to the poor as Fidya:

Let’s suppose that the price of two meals is equal to 1000 PKR, then need to calculate the number of missed fasts with 1000 to get the amount of Fidya:

Example:

Amount of Fidya = 1,000

No. of Missed Fasts = 30

1,000 x 30 = 30,000

The estimated payable amount as Fidya is 3,000 PKR. Remember that this is the estimated amount we mentioned to clear the concept of Fidya. You need to confirm the exact amount before paying Fidya. To get the exact amount, you need to contact Islamic scholars available in your hometown. Besides this, you can hear the speeches of renowned Islamic scholars about the amount of Fidya.

Difference Between Fidya and Kaffarah

Sometimes, people get confused about Fidya and Kaffarah. However, keep in mind that Fidya and Kaffarah are two different things. As we have discussed throughout our discussion, Fidya is a mandatory form of compensation that needs to be paid by Muslims who cannot fast during Ramadan.

On the other hand, Kaffarah is a form of compensation that needs to be paid by Muslims who knowingly break the fast. Kaffarah becomes mandatory when you intentionally eat or drink something and engage in sexual activities while fasting. The Kaffarah can be paid in different ways. For example, you can free a slave, fasting for sixty consecutive days, or feed sixty poor people as Kaffarah to get Allah’s forgiveness. Remember that Kaffarah does not become mandatory if someone eats or drinks accidentally during fasting.
